We as human beings experience emotions, and we experience them through waves. Coming and going, building up and finally breaking on the shore. Waves was written as an outlet, a way for myself to explore an emotional conflict that was occurring in my life. Throughout the writing and ultimately the recording of Waves, I was going through some mental changes. Depression and anxiety took over my life, leaving me feeling lost for a while. Waves came as an answer to this time in my life. It acted as a coping mechanism.
